What an affiliate marketing program is
An affiliate marketing program is a deal between a brand and a person who promotes it. You share a special link. When a reader uses that link and buys something, the brand pays you a commission.
FlexOffers' program page puts it simply. It says affiliate programs let a publisher earn commission for generating leads or sales.
Three parts make it work. The brand runs the program and pays. The affiliate, that is you, shares the link. The link itself tracks who sent the buyer.
How an affiliate program works, step by step
- You join a program. The brand gives you a link with your ID in it.
- You place that link where your readers are.
- A reader clicks it. The click leaves a marker that ties the visit to you. How long that marker counts is the cookie window.
- The reader buys or signs up.
- The program records the sale under your account.
- The brand pays your commission.
Amazon's Associates policies show how the tracking works. They say a qualifying purchase starts when a customer clicks a Special Link on your site to an Amazon site. They also say your Associates ID or tag must be a parameter in the URL of each link to Amazon.
Where affiliates place their links
Awin's publisher page says creators can share affiliate links in blogs, social posts, videos and newsletters. It also says you can promote brands on any social network.
Travelpayouts' homepage says anyone with a public channel, such as a blog, website or social media, can become an affiliate partner.
Those are Awin's and Travelpayouts' own terms, so check each program's page for where its links may go. If you post on a big platform, read its own rules too. See our pages on TikTok affiliate programs and YouTube affiliate programs.
How programs pay: commission structures and payout methods
Each program sets its own rate. Travelpayouts' homepage says each program states its reward rate in its terms, as a percentage or a fixed sum.
ClickBank's affiliate page says affiliates can be paid by revenue share or by cost per action. It says cost per action pays a set dollar amount.
The payout side differs too. impact.com's affiliate page says you can withdraw funds on a set day each month or at an established balance threshold. It also says it pays by direct transfer, BACS or PayPal, in the currency you choose. Travelpayouts' homepage says it pays automatically via PayPal or bank on the same day each month.
Amazon's Associates policies say Amazon pays commission about 60 days after the end of each calendar month.
Read more about the payout lines on how affiliate payouts are sent.
What it costs to join
Some programs' own pages say joining is free. FlexOffers' program page says it is free to register as a publisher. ClickBank's affiliate page says you sign up for a free ClickBank account to access products. impact.com's affiliate page says joining as an affiliate partner is free. Travelpayouts' homepage says sign-up is free, with no sign-up fees and no ongoing costs.
But each program sets its own terms. Check the program's own page before you join. If a page asks for a fee and does not explain it, ask before you pay.
Types of programs: in-house brand programs vs. networks
Some brands run their own programs. The Amazon affiliate program has its own page.
Others run on networks and marketplaces. These host many brand programs in one place. CJ's publisher page says you can join brand programs with a single click. It also says it offers two monthly payouts and dozens of payout currencies. Rakuten Advertising's publisher page says publishers can partner with brands in verticals like Luxury, Retail, Finance and Travel.
You can read about CJ, ClickBank, FlexOffers, impact.com, Rakuten Advertising and Travelpayouts on their own pages.
Rules affiliates agree to
Each program has its own terms. Amazon's Associates policies say you must not offer rewards or incentives to people for using your Special Links. They also say a link session ends after 24 hours or when the customer places an order, whichever comes first. A cart purchase counts if the order is completed within 89 days of the first click.
The Amazon Associates agreement says Amazon makes no promise about the traffic or commission income you can expect. It also says either side may end it at any time by giving written notice.
See our page on FTC affiliate disclosure requirements.
Next steps: program pages to read
Pick a program that fits what you already write about. Read its own page before you join. Copy the commission, tracking and payout lines, and note the date you read them.
Judge each program on its own stated terms.
